Return to the top and take the 0.8-mile Jomeokee loop, which circles the park’s trademark Big Pinnacle. Oh, and there are views to the valley floor below and the Blue Ridge mountains to the west. Pilot Mountain State Park, Pinacle (north of Winston-Salem)Īfter a long descent, the trail veers left and follows the bace of a cliff face that’s home to some of the best rock climbing in the region on routes the likes of Three Bears, Little Amphitheater, Pool Hall, among others. Start in a forest and field draped in kudzu, proceed into a bottomland forest, with frequent breaks offering peeks at the lake. It’s also flat and well-marked, with few distraction trails to lead you astray. More than 40 miles of trail rim the Greensboro watershed lakes of Brandt, Townsend and Higgins we like this one because it’s easy to find, with the trailhead (and parking) just off Strawberry Road. At the 2.3-mile mark, go left on the Reedy Creek bike and bridle trail - a wide, smooth surface of finely crushed gravel - for a mile-long downhill, then left again on the Reedy Creek Lake bike and bridle trail for a mile-long climb back to the trailhead. The Cole Mill Loop Trail at Eno River State Park.īesides the Cole Mill Loop, there is the Bobbitt Hole Loop, the Pea Creek Loop, and the Dunnagan Loop. The Cole Mill Trail follows along the Eno River and takes you up through a forested area before looping back to the trail head. We were going to do the 1.2 mile Cole Mill Loop with our son, but it started to rain so our hike was cut short. The nice thing about these trails is that most of them loop and meet up with other trails, so you can hike for as long or as short as you want to. There are six different hiking trails with approximately 30 miles of walking available for visitors at Eno River State Park. We spied some turtles chilling out on rocks in the middle of Eno River. The rare Roanoke Bass can also be found here. Fisherman can find a huge variety of fish amongst its shallow water, including bass, sunfish, and crappie. There are two historic cabins located off the Fews Ford Access area. This park offers hiking, camping, fishing, picnicking, several historic sites, and if the conditions are right, canoeing and kayaking along this beautiful waterway. Eno River State Park is a preserved section of the Eno River natural environment that anyone can enjoy. The Eno River is part of the Neuse River system, the longest river contained within North Carolina, that flows into Falls Lake. The trails are easy to follow, easy to walk along, and the scenery provides visitors with so much nature to look upon! Looking down the Eno River. It was one of our favorite places that we happened upon while in North Carolina. This park offers a wonderful respite for anyone living in the urban areas of Durham and Orange Counties. On our way from Virginia Beach to Charlotte, we stopped to stretch our legs and take a short hike along the Cole Mill Trail at Eno River State Park in North Carolina.
